THIS IS NORMAL

THIS IS NORMAL is about a young Deaf woman named Gwen who undergoes an experimental medical procedure that is supposed to 'cure' her of her deafness and give her the ability to hear. Despite the controversy, Gwen risks her friends, culture, and identity to discover the answer to the question, 'Is it worth giving up who you've BEEN for the 'maybe' you could BECOME?'

THIS IS NORMAL est l'histoire de Gwen, une jeune femme sourde qui subit un protocole médical expérimental qui est censé « guérir » sa surdité et lui donner la capacité d'entendre. Malgré des controverses, Gwen risque ses amis, sa culture et son identité pour decouvrir la réponse à la question qui l'interpelle : Est-ce qu'il faut abandonner la personne qu'elle est pour devenir la personne qu'elle croit pouvoir être.

Gwen is a woman who seems to have everything together in her life. She’s beautiful, young, has amazing friends and an even more amazing boyfriend who loves her deeply. There’s only one “problem” – Gwen is deaf. Her well-meaning family opted to “mainstream” her by forcing her to attend public schools instead of Deaf schools and to learn how to read lips rather than speak American Sign Language. This has left Gwen feeling like she doesn't belong in either the world of the hearing nor the world of the Deaf, a tight-knit culture proud of their language and fiercely defensive to those who would disparage them and label them “handicapped.” 

Feeling isolated, Gwen decides to undergo a new medical procedure that will allow her to hear. Cutting-edge stem-cell technology has advanced to the point where her dream of being “normal” can finally come true. Hoping for support from her Deaf friends and boyfriend, she is dismayed to find that some of them feel betrayed. Her boyfriend argues that she is giving up something that makes her special and that their relationship can't survive. Gwen - though torn and heartbroken and warned of the risks of the procedure – still decides to move forward with the surgery.

It's a disaster. Faced with an uncomfortable future, Gwen finally turns inward to search for happiness and self-acceptance. She realizes that being “normal” can only be defined from within.

Gwen est une femme à qui tout semble sourire dans la vie. Il n'y a qu'un 'problème' : Gwen est sourde. Sa famille ne voulait pas qu'elle vive en marge de la société, elle a choisi de lui faire suivre une scolarité normale plutôt que dans une école spécialisée pour malentendants, et de lui apprendre à lire sur les lèvres plutôt que de parler dans la langue des signes américain. Par conséquent, Gwen se sent entre deux mondes, n'appartenant ni au monde des entendants, ni au monde des malentendants, une communauté très soudée, fiers de leur langage et prêts à se défendre ardemment contre ceux qui les dénigreraient et leur colleraient l'étiquette d'handicapés.

Gwen décide de tenter un nouveau protocole médical qui lui permettra d’entendre. L’utilisation, à la pointe du progrès, de cellules souches peut désormais faire de son rêve d’être «normale» une réalité. Espérant le soutien des ses amis sourds et de son petit ami, elle est effondrée quand elle se rend compte qu’ils se sentent trahis. Son petit ami plaide qu’elle abandonne ce qui la rend spéciale et que leur couple n’y survivra pas. Gwen, bien que déchirée, le cœur brisé, et prévenue des risques du protocole, décide malgré tout de poursuivre l’opération.

C’est un désastre. Face à un futur inconfortable, elle réalise qu’être «normale» ne peut être défini de l’extérieur, mais doit l’être de l’intérieur.
